Tupuārangi opened in February 2026 and is the newest Hall of Residence at the University of Canterbury. Proudly managed by UniLodge, Tupuārangi is a fully catered hall of residence offering 283 single-ensuite bedrooms. Designed to support your transition to independence, the hall combines privacy with connection – quiet study spaces when you need focus, and welcoming shared lounges when you’re ready to unwind.
Residents at Tupuārangi are supported by 24/7 available staff. Residents have a dedicated Kaiāwhina Taurima who meets with residents regularly to guide them throughout their first year of study, while our team of student leader Taurima facilitate engagement within Kāhui (neighbourhoods) within the hall. Tupuārangi is a place primed for students to have academic success.
Located alongside Tupuānuku on the edge of the Ilam heritage garden, Tupuārangi carries a name gifted by local iwi Ngāi Tūāhuriri. Inspired by the Matariki star Tupuārangi – associated with growth, nourishment and the upper forest canopy – the hall has been thoughtfully designed to reflect connection to people, place and wellbeing. It’s more than just a place to stay; it’s a place to grow.
As a resident, you’ll enjoy:
Common areas and dedicated group study spaces are conveniently located on each floor, providing residents with comfortable, well-designed environments to relax, collaborate, and focus on their studies. These shared spaces are ideal for group projects, informal meetings, or unwinding between classes, helping to foster a strong sense of community within the property while supporting both academic success and social connection.
Complimentary laundry facilities are available for all residents, providing a convenient and cost-effective way to take care of everyday washing needs. Equipped with easy-to-use machines, the on-site laundry spaces are designed to make student living simpler and more comfortable, saving both time and money while supporting a hassle-free lifestyle within the property.
Some helpful tips
Public transport in Canterbury, particularly in Christchurch, is reliable, affordable, and well-connected, making it easy for residents to travel across the city and surrounding areas. The network is primarily made up of Metro bus services, which operate frequent routes linking suburbs, universities, shopping centres, and key destinations, with high-frequency buses running every 10–15 minutes along major corridors. A central Bus Interchange in the city provides a convenient hub for transfers, while additional services extend to nearby towns such as Rangiora and Lincoln. With accessible fares, real-time tracking, and regular services around university campuses, public transport offers a practical and sustainable way for students and residents to get around without the need for a car.
