Moving to New Zealand to study is a huge step and we know it can feel a bit like stepping into the unknown. New people, new streets, new slang, even a new way to cross the road (yes, the green man flashes fast here!). But while it’s normal to feel a bit unsure at first, you’ll be surprised how quickly things start to click into place.
One of the best ways to feel grounded is by getting to know your surroundings. Once you’re unpacked and settled into your UniLodge room, take some time to explore. Find your closest supermarket, a cosy café, or a park to unwind in. If you’re in Wellington, Cuba Street is a good place to start. In Auckland, try a walk-through Albert Park or along the waterfront.
It’s also worth getting the essentials sorted early. Set up your local bank account, grab a NZ SIM card, and familiarise yourself with public transport getting these practical things out of the way makes life a whole lot easier later on.
Culture-wise, New Zealand is pretty relaxed. People say hello when they pass you on the street. They call flip flops “jandals” and aren’t in a hurry to get places. Try leaning into the slower pace. Say yes to spontaneous invites. Try new foods (you haven’t really arrived until you’ve had a mince and cheese pie). Let yourself make mistakes and ask questions. Kiwis are generally kind, open, and happy to help.
And if you’re feeling homesick because at some point, you probably will remember that it’s normal. You’re not alone. Reach out to friends, join a UniLodge event, or come talk to our team. We’ve helped thousands of students settle in, and we’ve always got time for a chat.
